I dont drive up to Sac very often & only discovered New Lai Wah a year or so ago I'm always on the look out for Chinese restaurants with fish tasnk that serve whole steamed fish (usually black bass) & I only go there for that. Yeah, thr place is kinda grubby ,& untidy in rhat Chinese resaurant kinda way but it's the fiid that counts& New Lai Wah usially does a pretty good job of that.

Ordered 5 dishes to-go and the food was securely packaged and double bagged. Some of the dishes i ordered required ventilation, so they cut the top corners of the box container, so the food wouldn't be soggy. The flavor of every dish was to rave for. I love dining and ordering food to-go, the flavors are always consistent. The food was also ready on time!

We've been going to Lai Wah since undergrad, over 25 years ago. It wasn't "New" Lai Wah back then, and nothing about this restaurant is new, but the food is delicious. The service is exactly what you'd expect from an authentic Chinese restaurant. We don't go there for the service. I agree, it would be nice if they were more attentive, if they said "thank you" more often, didn't slam plates down, but at the end of the day, these things don't bother me that much. I'd rather have poor service and good food than the other way around. If you're reading the reviews and not sure about whether to go, why don't you order a few things to-go and try the food without the service. It's genuinely good and I think you will agree. Our go-to dishes: - Beef with green chow fun, gravy style - so much wok hei; savory, smoky, rich and beefy - Seafood chow mein, Hong Kong style (with the crispy noodles) - Wonton soup - Seafood tofu claypot Again, don't expect much from the service. Don't expect a spotlessly clean restaurant. But do expect to find really good Cantonese food.

Don't judge a book by its cover. New Lai Wah is located across the street from the Sacramento Executive Airport on Freeport Blvd. I was searching for a dinner spot in Sacramento for my family and I on 05/27/2023 and this place came up. Initially, I was a little hesitant of trying this place because of their low overall rating. But the more I looked at their food, the more I was convinced that this place is legit. Since fortune favors the brave, the final call was made to come here. We walked in at 5 pm and the place was pretty quiet. The staff promptly greeted us in Cantonese, and we were seated at a corner table per my request. The tables and chairs were pretty old. The interior was dated and kind of dark. Cleanliness was marginal. To the left of the cash register counter, there were several live fish tanks. The setup totally reminded me of Chinatown restaurants in the old days. Tea and menus were brought to us quickly. After a few moments of deliberation, we ordered a quintet of dishes. The following is what we got: *Hand-Shredded Chicken - It was garnished with peanuts and served with a sand ginger sauce. Free range chicken was used. The meat was tender and flavorful. *Curry Beef Stew with Cellophane Noodles - It was served in a big pot. Large pieces of beef were used and they were very tender. The sauce was authentic Cantonese style (great curry flavor and not spicy). The cellophane noodles soaked up all the curry goodness. *Broth-Poached Fish Fillet with Veggies - It was served in a pot of broth. The pieces of fish were flaky and mild in taste. The spinach used was very fresh. The broth, accented with fried garlic cloves and salted duck eggs, was light and flavorful. *Spicy Seafood Tofu Claypot - Pieces of tofu were golden brown and crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Small size shrimp, scallops, and calamari were used and they all tasted fine. Sauce had a slight spicy kick. *Peking Pork Chops - We ordered the salt and pepper version but this came instead because the staff made a mistake (it was in a to-go box too). They offered to remake it but I declined. Lean, meaty chops were used for the dish. Sauce was on point. The portions were huge. We had a lot of leftovers. Contrary to some other reviewers' experiences, we received very good service. The staff were hospitable and efficient. The total, with T/T, was just $83. The same meal in the Bay Area would probably cost 50% more. This place is legit Cantonese. We will return. 4 solid stars. BONUS MATERIAL: - This restaurant used to be a part of the Asian Pearl chain. - Major credit cards accepted. - Private parking lot on site.

Came here during new years around 12 ish. Some people there but not much. Been trying and retrying Chinese restaurants in sac and glad to have tried this one! Prices are decently priced and food is overall decently good! We tried the beef stew with bean thread ( fun see) , salt and pepper pork, peking rib, lamb stew, wet beef chow fun, yang chow fried rice, singapore noodles, and house special chow mein. Most of it were good- both the stews, singapore noodles, peking ribs- but the others lacked some flavor. Our go to always at chinese places is their wet beef chow fun and it was very mid, not enough flavor or gravy/sauce and the noodles were kinda rly clumpy and soggy. Overall food is pretty good compared to price! Portions are okay not a lot alot but not little. Also dont expect to have service at traditional chinese restaurants lol.
